IMPACT STATEMENTS

WSSU | 2013-2017

When I began my time at Winston Salem State, I started off as a nursing major. After about two weeks of being here I made up my mind and changed majors. Before declaring Biology as my major, I went through two more major. The Biology department welcomed me with open arms and all of the answers that I wanted to hear. My transition was as smooth as the paved streets on University Parkway. I made this switch the summer coming into my junior year and I was determined to graduate on time. With the faculty doing their best and giving their all, reaching the finish line was no biggie. In this program, I have found my passion in science. I have always know that I loved science but this department has allowed me to define that love. The time that the professors put in creating lesson plans, and insuring that ALL students have grasped the concepts is amazing. As I mentioned in m personal statement, I want to be a teacher that can impact someone's life. The professors in the Biology department, the Department Chairs, Ms. Dombrowski, and even the lab techs, they have left nothing but a sweet experience at Winston Salem State University. I do not think that I would have been able to make it through with out them.
Thank you WSSU Biology!

I wish that I would have taken this class as soon as I declared my major as Biology. This class provided me with many elements that would create a strong research foundation. Many of the concepts that I learned in this class were things such as: making a solution, analyzing scholarly articles, solving math equations related to lab and many more. This class provided me with things that I could have used early on. My professor brought in different professors that had research projects on campus and gave them the opportunity to come in and talk about what their research was on. This was great because if I were a freshman or sophomore, or even a junior, I could have an idea on what project I would want to be apart of. I'd be able to ask the specific professor questions and get real-time feedback. I appreciated this class because even as a senior, I was able to sharpen up on all of my lab and research skills.

With this being my last semester, I was excited to see the variety in class options. Prior to taking this class, I did not think that I would enjoy it as much as I did. On the first day, my professor Dr. Dance-Barnes made us aware that this was a new class and that she would make sure that we'd enjoy. She did just that. Coming into a class blindly, as a student, is sometimes scary. I remember when Dr. Dance-Barnes introduced to us about eBird and how we'd be taking a class trip to our school's backyard. Our backyard was behind the parking lot, or anywhere outside where we spotted birds. I thought to myself "How elementary is this?"

Ultimately, I enjoyed every moment, from trying to create a language with the birds that I saw, to now noticing the many different birds around the beautiful campus of Winston Salem State University.

I do hope that this is a class that is kept for a long time. Having a variety of different science/biology classes definitely gives one the chance to narrow down on career/post graduation options.
